Faithfulness in the Wilderness

David refuses to kill Saul because he will not take by force what God has promised to give in His time. His restraint shows reverence for the Lord and trust in the Lord’s timing. This passage calls believers to trust God when revenge seems available and even justifiable. David had the opportunity, pressure, and a reasonable argument from his men, but he refused to sin in order to secure God’s promise. A growing believer

does not use sinful means to obtain what only God can rightly give. A mark of spiritual maturity for all of us is modeled for us all: faithful restraint trusts God’s promises without taking sinful shortcuts.
