Mercy at the Altar

David’s sinful census reveals the danger of pride and misplaced confidence in human strength, while God’s judgment demonstrates the seriousness of sin. Yet the story does not end with judgment. At the threshing floor, God provides mercy through sacrifice as David builds an altar and offers worship to the LORD. This moment points beyond David to Christ, the greater King who stands between judgment and His people and offers not an animal sacrifice, but Himself as the final sacrifice for sinners. Near the end of David’s life, he still needs correction, confession, mercy, and atonement, reminding believers that no one ever outgrows dependence on God. Spiritual maturity does not culminate in self-confidence, but in humble reliance upon God’s mercy, expressed through repentance, worship, and costly surrender. The mature believer finishes well by depending on God’s mercy from beginning to end.
