The Lord Builds the House

David desires to build a house for the Lord, but the Lord promises to build a house for David. The Davidic covenant shows that God’s grace is greater than David’s plans and that God’s kingdom promise rests on His faithfulness. Those who bless him will be blessed, and those who curse him will be cursed. God promises David an everlasting kingdom, a son, a throne, and a house. This covenant ultimately points to Jesus, the Son of David, whose kingdom will never end. Jesus is the final King who fulfills God’s promise to David and reigns forever. David’s desire to honor the Lord is good, but God’s promise to David is greater. Spiritual maturity rests in what God has promised rather than rushing to what we can accomplish. A growing believer serves from grace, not for grace, and learns that God’s purposes are larger than our plans. Mature believers should learn to have confidence in God’s covenant grace rather than in personal achievement.
