When Knowledge Hurts: Love Above Liberty
Holy Spirit-given knowledge is valuable, but freedom in Christ must always be measured and governed by love for Christ and other believers, and never by self-indulgence– especially when exercising your Christian freedoms around others with weaker consciences. True Christian freedom is not measured by what I am allowed to do, but by how willing I am to forego it for the good of another fellow Christian. How do mature believers steward liberty without crushing weaker consciences? Ask two questions before exercising freedom: 1) “Is it lawful?” and 2) “Is it loving?” Then, always choose love—never use freedom if it causes a weaker believer to stumble. Sacrifice personal rights for the sake of others. Avoid insisting on freedoms when it may cause harm; instead, in love, bear with others' limitations.
